Qui-Gon Jinn with Eopie Comparison

published on June 13, 2014

This editorial aims to help you answer which Qui-Gon Jinn with Eopie set might be a better fit for your collection. Hasbro has released two different Qui-Gon Jinn with Eopie sets in the 3 3/4inch line over the years.

In 1999, Hasbro released a Qui-Gon Jinn figure together with an Eopie which was difficult to obtain in the U.S. and went for premium prices on Ebay. Ten years later Hasbro decided to re-release the hard-to-get set for fans, but in different packaging and with an updated Qui-Gon Jinn figure and a re-painted Eopie. The set could be obtained via mail when the UPC codes from any five figures from the Legacy Collection, the Saga Legends or the Clone Wars Collection were sent in along with a check for $6.99. This mail-in promotion ran from Summer 2009 until March 31st, 2010. The first sets arrived on doorsteps in early October '09.

The mailer box and the contents

Hasbro sent Qui-Gon Jinn with the Eopie out in a simple white mailer box without any additional protection. Most of the figures arrived in a beat-up and damaged condition. This was a nightmare for boxed/carded collectors. The figure and the Eopie inside the box were in prestine condition and undamaged.

As you can see in the picture below, the set doesn't display well in its packaging. Here is a look at what's inside the box:

Eopie comparisons

For the 2009 Eopie Hasbro used the same mold which was used for the 1999 version. This time however the paint application was different and "updated". The 2009 Eopie featured a more yellowish skin color, has far less frackles on the stomach, and has differently painted bags. Also, the 2009 version has more "dirt" applied around the neck and head area.

Which one is nicer?

After comparing both Eopies for a while and staring at them in-hand, I'd go with the 1999 Eopie. The skin color on the 1999 version seems to be closer to what we remember seeing in The Phantom Menace. However, both versions look nice on display, especially when they are placed into a Mos Espa inspired diorama.

The clear winner here is the 2009 version with more joints in the figure, a better Liam Neeson likeness, and overall more details in the face and the outfit. However, both figures fit well onto the Eopie. For a closer look at both figures, please take a look at the individual figure entries:
